Success Rates
Many studies have been conducted on the outcome of surgery for vasectomy reversal. To determine the vasectomy reversal success rate, the following factors are important:
- length of time since the original vasectomy
- female partner's age
- experience of surgeon and technical factors (improved results such as the use of newer techniques - microscope assisted vasovasostomy)
Experienced surgeons are able to offer their patients greater than 90% chance of a positive sperm count at three months after vasectomy reversal.
The chance of pregnancy decreases by 10% for every year that has elapsed after the original vasectomy.
- year 1 after vasectomy 90% chance of pregnancy
- year 3 after vasectomy 70% chance of pregnancy
- year 5 after vasectomy 50% chance of pregnancy
- year 8 after vasectomy 20% chance of pregnancy
It is still possible to achieve a pregnancy more than 10 years after a vasectomy but the chances are reduced.
It should be noted that female partners over 35 years of age have a reduced chance of becoming pregnant.
Mr Duncan Harriss' Success Rates
Individual surgeons' success rates for all types of surgery have been shown to be related to the volume of cases performed. The same is true of vasectomy reversal success and it is important you ask your surgeon about his personal experience.
In the last 12 months, 92% of men having a vasectomy reversal within 10 years of their vasectomy, have achieved a positive sperm count .
