Have Questions About Vasectomy Reversal Recovery

We hear from many people every day who are considering vasectomy reversal. While several of them have concerns about the procedure itself, there are quite a few who wonder the most about the recovery period following surgery. Perhaps you have a few questions as well. If so, we’d like to take some time and address them, in an effort to put your mind at ease.

Your vasectomy reversal recovery period is going to be different from another patient’s simply because we’re all different people. However, generally, there are a few guidelines that must be followed to ensure you have the best experience possible, as well as the quickest recovery possible.

First of all, prior to having the procedure, ensure that you take sufficient time off from work. It’s important for you to have a week off. If your job requires frequent heavy lifting, you’ll need two weeks off due to physical restrictions during the recovery period. During this time, rest and relaxation is the key to having you back participating in your regular activities sooner. You will have pain medication to help with any discomfort you might feel, and we recommend wearing underwear that is supportive, or even a jockstrap during this time.

While daily bathing is important to keep the wound clean, you’ll want to refrain from swimming for four to six weeks.

The good news is, after the first two weeks have been completed, you’ll be able to return to your normal activities. Your lifting restrictions will be lifted, you’ll be able to begin participating in sports or working out at the gym, and you’ll be able to begin having intercourse with your partner, once again.

Of course, you’ll want to use your own discretion as you slowly ease back into your regular activities. Take your time, and do what feel’s best for you. You’ll want to follow any further guidelines Mr. Harriss might recommend for your unique situation, of course. However, most of our patients find that those two weeks fly by, and they’re able to get back to everything they love.
